The story is set in 1926 in London during the General Strike.  The government was under considerable pressure to maintain law and order as strikes spread from the coal miners to other industries and nation-wide paralysis followed.

Many ordinary people were aware of the recent 1917 Russian revolution, and there were genuine fears that communists and anarchists could hijack the General Strike and overthrow the government. This may explain the government’s decision to recruit students (mainly from Oxford and Cambridge) temporary into the police force to help contain the strikers.

This gave the privileged Oxbridge students an opportunity to come into contact with the strikers. There was a collision between the two different worlds. The story follows the lives and loves of a group of Cambridge students through the General Strike.

The inspiration the musical came from a policeman’s truncheon that used to hang in my grandfather’s hallway.  He was an agricultural student at Cambridge during the general strike and volunteered to go to London to enforce law and order.
