Composer – Keith Foley, Book – Ian Winfrey

A chamber musical with a cast of four singers.

The plot for the musical emerged from letters discovered by my wife’s family solicitors in their cellars in Edinburgh.  These traced the family’s rise to fortune in the East India Company and subsequent business ventures in Australia and Mauritius during the expansion of the British Empire.  The characters are a mixture of fact and fiction but the locations and events are based on the contents of the letters, as is the confirmation of a family secret.  More relatives have been found using ancestry software and an annual party for all is held in France.

The lead character is John Littleton who is trying to find out about his mother who died when he was a young child. He fears his memories of her will fade unless he learns more about her. Her family is shrouded in mystery and all he has to go on is a rumour of a tragedy of a long dead relative called Nadia. We travel back in time with him on his quest meeting different generations of his family. His relatives turn out to be of surprising variety.
